1899 - French author Edmond Papinot presents the earliest known "traditionalistic" description of the 'Komusō' tradition in a Western language, namely French - first published as translated into English in 1910.

1975 - Ruth Sasaki Fuller: Translation of the 'Lin-chi lu', Jap.: 'Rinzai roku', with chapters about early 9th century Chinese 'P'u-k'o Ch'an-shi', Jap.: 'Fuke Zenji'.

1977 - Tsuge Gen'ichi: English translation of the Kyotaku denki.

1977 - James H. Sanford: English translation of an Ichigetsu-ji honsoku text.

1981 - James H. Sanford: English translations of shakuhachi and Fuke Zenji related poems by Ikkyū Sōjun.

1983 - Andreas Gutzwiller: German translations of three Hisamatsu Fūyō essays about shakuhachi playing.

1988/2008 - Christopher Blasdel: English translation/adaptation of Kamisangō Yūkō's Nippon Columbia 'Suizen' LP record set cover notes of 1974, written in modern Japanese.

1987 - Torsten Olafsson thesis: English translations of the 1628 Kaidō honsoku, one of the two 'Komosō' chapters in the 1614 Keichō kenmonshū short story collection, and other 'Komosō'- and 'Komusō'-related texts.

1988 - Christopher Blasdel: Adaptation/translation of Kamisangō Yūkō's 1974 Nippon Columbia 'Suizen' LP introductory article.

2008 - Anonymous: Tsukitani Tsuneko's article on 'Shakuhachi' in The Ashgate Research Companion to Japanese Music.

2012 - Gunnar Linder: English translations of short texts about the 'Boro-boro', a section from Shichiku Shoshinshū, and other quotations.

2016 - Philip Flavin: Full translation of Izumi Takeo’s 2013 illustrated book about Edo Period shakuhachi performers.




2003 to the present, by Torsten Olafsson:
English translations of Isshi Bunshu's Letter to Sandō Mugetsu, the Butsu-gen, a section of the Shichiku shoshinshū, and of quite a number of shorter selected ascetic shakuhachi related texts throughout Japanese history.

Besides, Danish translations of selected Chinese and Japanese texts about "Zen Shakuhachi".
